Major Exploration Fair

On Thursday, October 12th in the Student Center Ballroom from 11:00am - 3:00pm, our Advising and Career Teams will host a Major Exploration Fair tailored specifically toward undergraduate students. This event offers an amazing opportunity for students to learn about the 200+ undergraduate majors offered by EMU!

Students will have the chance to engage in insightful conversations with faculty and staff representing various major departments along with campus resources. The primary goal is to provide students with the increased knowledge of what is available for them to pursue in order to reach their future career goals. This is a great opportunity for you to get the word out about your majors to our students as well!

Please let us know if your department would be interested in participating in this event by Friday, September 15th by filling out our Google Form. We recommend one or more faculty from each participating major be represented and a student representative from a program for peer connection. Since it will be a longer event, feel free to have representatives come in and out throughout the day!

Our Career Coaches will be there to bring their expertise to provide students the necessary tools they need to gain a better understanding of where their personal and career interests align with academic programs.

This event will combine both academic journeys and professional goals thus honing in on our mission, “We Support Your Goals!”

If you have any questions, please contact Kristian Burns (kburns13@emich.edu).

Formosa Quartet

The Formosa Quartet join EMU as the 2023-24 M. Thelma McAndless Distinguished professors with visits in January and April

In advance of their in-person visits, the Formosa Quartet has asked us to share the following message and Google Form with all students and employees of EMU with hopes that you might participate in their American Mirror Project.

Hello Everyone! We are the Formosa Quartet and we're looking forward to spending time at Eastern this coming year as the 23/24 McAndless Scholars. Our American Mirror Project is a collaborative initiative in which participants hold up personal mirrors to America, their reflections of what America means. We would love to hear from YOU!

Please join us by submitting your own mirror — an audio file, video file, or written statement — in response to the prompts in our Google Form. You can be as serious or lighthearted as you would like! Our goal is to incorporate as many of your quotes into a short film and musical piece in our January performance.

With gratitude,

Formosa Quartet (Jasmine Lin, Wayne Lee, Matthew Cohen, and Deborah Pae)

Academic/Community Engagement Mini-Grants for Faculty

The EMU Engage office is offering a Community Engaged Mini-Grant program for AS-L Faculty to complete community engaged projects with students and faculty. According to Engage:

At the conclusion of the Ford Community Corps Grant program in Winter 2022, Engage@EMU was left with a pool of money that was never used, largely due to COVID and the effect it had on the projects that were selected for the FCC Grants. That being said, we are excited to say that we have been able to create our own mini-grant program using those funds! We are offering grants of up to 2,500 dollars to fund community engagement initiatives and projects led by AS-L/Community Engaged Faculty. The link to apply is HERE. These funds can be used to initiate projects related to courses, projects outside of the classroom, or a field/practicum requirement. The application will close on September 17th, 2023, at 11:59pm.

Participants in this learning community will work to become change agents and begin or continue disability accessibility work in their home colleges or departments. Membership in this learning community is open to part-time lecturers, full-time lecturers, staff, or faculty during the 2023-24 academic year. Participation will entail attending eight meetings of roughly 75 minutes spread out over the Fall 2023 and Winter 2024 semesters. Participants who persist in the learning community throughout the two semesters and develop a plan for implementing the lessons they learned in their departments or programs will receive $400 for their time and work.

This program involves several different levels of support, including individual and small group sessions, weekly training modules, accountability calls from NCFDD-Certified Coaches, and a time tracking system to help you collect data regarding your own writing and research productivity.
