The inaugural order of the Engineer ceremony
On Saturday, Aug. 10, The GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology hosted its inaugural Order of the Engineer Ceremony. This event brought together alums and recent graduates of the college, celebrating their transition from students to professionals.
According to the website, the Order of the Engineer was initiated in the United States to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present a visible symbol identifying the engineer to the public. By taking the Obligation of the Engineer and wearing the stainless steel ring on their working hand, participants publicly pledged to practice integrity, fairness, and respect in their professional endeavors.

Learning Communities
Application Due By: September 4, 2024
The Digital Humanities Learning Community is an academic year-long community that creates opportunities for EMU instructors to explore the theory and practice of leveraging the digital humanities within their own classrooms. A small group of 4-6 dedicated instructors will learn various approaches and benefits to incorporating the digital humanities in courses; learn from leading experts in the field; practice with different tools and interfaces; and design a potential project for their own classroom. Participants in collaboration with the facilitators will seek out compelling ways to blend research and practice by designing digital humanities projects within their courses, thus creating unique and meaningful opportunities for students to engage in publicly accessible research. Faculty completing this learning community will receive an honorarium of $325 at the end of the school year.
Application Due By: September 6, 2024
Are you an EMU faculty or staff member interested in exploring academic leadership? Do you want to develop leadership skills to support any position you're in, or might one day pursue? If yes, the Academic Leadership Community of Practice (AL-CoP) may be a great opportunity for you! This CoP was first offered in 2023-2024 academic year and is back by popular demand!
This year, the Al-CoP will be facilitated by Rachelle Marshall (Administrative Secretary for the Department of Teacher Education), Andrea Zakrajsek (Associate Dean of the College of Health and Human Services), and Jeffrey Bernstein (Professor of Political Science and Director of the Faculty Development Center). Returning participants are welcome and encouraged! New topics and activities will be generated with our collective community.
Application Due By: September 15, 2024
This year’s General Education Professional Learning Community will focus on active learning—designing outcome-based learning activities for general education classes. This semester-long learning community will foster the creation and revision of measurable, relevant, and effective learning activities to ensure accurate understanding and assessment of student learning outcomes in four major areas: Social Sciences (GEKS), Humanity (GEKH), Arts (GEKA), and Writing Intensive (GEEC-WRGT). We encourage tenure-track, non-tenure-track, graduate instructors, part-time and full-time lecturers to participate. The community will meet twice a month from early October to early December. Participants who complete all community meetings and assignments will receive an $300 honorarium, a certificate, and a set of new/revised learning activities and strategies to improve their pedagogies and ultimately students' learning outcomes.
Application Due By: September 5, 2024
The Engaging in Inclusive Practices amid Challenging Times Learning Community is bringing together a group of educators to explore topics on inclusive practices in order to create more positive learning environments for students so that they can persist in their majors and toward graduation. Participants in this learning community are working to learn about inclusive practices so that they can acquire knowledge and tools to take to their respective colleges and departments to continue this work. Participants will receive a $300 honorarium for their work in this learning community.
Application Due By: September 10, 2024
This year-long learning community will consist of both faculty and students who aim to generate conversations surrounding the student experience and ways it could be enhanced to support greater student retention. Students and faculty who participate in this learning community will have the opportunity to contribute to addressing a significant challenge at EMU. They will also become part of a growing community rethinking many assumptions about higher education, at EMU and beyond. Those who persist in this learning community will receive a $500 honorarium.
Application Due By: September 11, 2024
Aligned to EMU’s strategic plan, this Fall 2024 Learning Community experience will consist of three workshops that provide an opportunity for faculty participants to learn about the new and innovative 2+2 Early Childhood Education fully online program proposal process that can be applied and tailored to various disciplines across Eastern Michigan University. Participants will explore all aspects of the 2+2 program proposal development, and follow a supportive project guide designed to support faculty in developing new and innovative program initiatives leading to a proposal. This university-wide learning community is open to all full-time faculty and full-time lecturers, particularly if they are interested in learning about and creating innovative discipline-specific program development initiatives designed to meet the needs of the modern student, help address low enrollment, and support current workforce demands in the community. Those who complete the program will receive an honorarium of $300.
Upcoming Events
Date: Friday, September 27, 2024
As instructors, we are sometimes placed in the difficult position of teaching immediately after (or during) an unnerving event or a crisis—and it seems these situations are happening more and more frequently. Sometimes, we have time to process the event before we must teach, and to think at length about how to address it (or not). Other times, we may have much less warning. As such, it is important to be prepared ahead of time to appropriately handle difficult situations (whatever they may be) with both the students’ and our wellness in mind.
Amidst our heated and contentious political climate, this program offers guidance for instructional staff in thinking about the 2024 election, and other stressful local, national, and world events, in our classrooms. Please consider attending this workshop to find support and strategies for dealing with the challenges of the outside world, while navigating the complexities of academic life. We invite all tenure-track faculty and lecturers to attend this program. Lunch will be provided.
Date: First group meeting Friday, October 25, 2024
This program, facilitated by EMU library faculty Kate Pittsley-Sousa and Julia Nims, is aimed at encouraging, assisting, and developing skills in EMU instructors related to the adoption of free or more affordable course materials. EMU instructors will be introduced to key concepts of open educational resources and will practice different methods of finding affordable reading materials. The goal of this program is for each participant to discover an alternative text that they would consider adopting. All sessions will be held virtually over Zoom. Attendees will receive a $100 honorarium for participating in this series.
Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity Showcase
Date: Tuesday, October 29, 2024
Each year, the FDC works with ORDA (the Office of Research Development and Administration) to host the Faculty Research and Creative Activity Showcase. This year, we are moving the event to the fall (Tuesday, October 29, from 3 PM to 5 PM), and inviting students to visit tables highlighting faculty work. We hope to create opportunities for faculty to network with other faculty in the school as well as with students who are interested in their line of work, to build partnerships. We particularly invite recent recipients of EMU Internal Research Awards to join us and display some of their work in progress. Please save the date and plan to join us for good conversation. Details to follow.

Eastern Michigan University Featured in The Princeton Review’s Best 390 Colleges for 2025
EMU is one of the nation's best institutions for undergraduates according to The Princeton Review. The education services company profiles and recommends EMU in the new edition of its annual college guide, The Best 390 Colleges: 2025 Edition.
Only about 15% of America’s 2,600 four-year colleges are profiled in the book. The Princeton Review choses the colleges for the book based on data it annually collects from surveys of 2,000 college administrators about their institutions’ academic offerings. The company also reviews data from its surveys of college students attending the schools who report on their experiences at their institutions.

h2c
How h2c came to be
As the latest season of one of EMU’s newest workshop series hits the ground running, we asked Director of Academic Advising Alicia Apperson about how “How to College” came to be.
How to College (H2C) was an idea that emerged after seeing how COVID-19 impacted students on campus in ways that perhaps hadn't been as obvious before the pandemic. Issues such as face to face communication skills, self-advocacy, and student-driven anxiety were only exacerbated by COVID-19. H2C was created as a way to offer approachable, small-group workshops to facilitate discussion, to connect students with campus resources, and to show students that they aren’t alone in their worries.
Starting in Fall ‘23, H2C held 8 workshops with a total of 112 participants. This semester, H2C hopes to grow that number with 8 new workshops held both virtually and in person. This semester they’ve also partnered with the Honor’s College for student volunteers to promote more student-driven dialogue during sessions.
Fall ‘24 will offer 8 workshops, each with a different topic. September alone will have three sessions, including:
All students can benefit from H2C workshops. With the wide variety in topics H2C hosts, it is more likely than not a student will find a subject beneficial for them. Past anonymous feedback from the Fall ‘23 workshops praised the small-group atmosphere where all voices could be heard, the variety of student experiences present, and the practical advice gained from hearing testimonials from students, staff, and faculty.
“I enjoyed hearing others’ answers to the questions and being able to have group discussions” - Student Feedback
H2C connects students with their campus, providing a deeper understanding of the resources available to them and growing the sense of community they have among their cohort, staff, and faculty. Encourage your students to register today!
If you’d like to be involved in H2C or have other inquiries, reach out to Vanessa Gardner.

ESPORTS
The Esports department is set to move from the Rec/IM to the Student Center, a transition that aligns with our commitment to providing a more centralized and accessible space for students involved in this rapidly growing field. This relocation is designed to enhance the student experience by positioning Esports at the heart of campus life, making it easier for students to engage with the program both academically and recreationally.

In Memoriam
Annette L. Rurka
August 15, 1958 - August 27, 2024
We are sorry to report that Annette Rurka, a member of the EMU Foundation team, passed away on the morning of August 27. She was a proud Eastern alum, sister, aunt, and much more. During her time at EMU, she received a Bachelor of Science degree in English Language and Literature, with a minor in Art History.
She spent 48 years of her 66 years of life working at EMU. She was proud of her University and she was proud to call herself an EMU Eagle.
She was an avid donator, no matter her financial position she always made sure to do whatever she could for others. She was passionate about donating to causes to keep the future of our world bright, a world she will never see but will always be a part of building. Voting blue and keeping women's bodily rights were at the forefront of the causes she held so dear in her heart. To honor her memory please consider donating to ActBlue (an organization she donated most to) or Eastern Michigan University Give Charity
Due to being a registered donor with Gift of Life, there will not be a funeral or a viewing at this time, but in the future, a Celebration of Life will be held. Announcements and details will be updated at www.niefuneralhomes.com
