The inaugural order of the Engineer ceremony

On Saturday, Aug. 10, The GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology hosted its inaugural Order of the Engineer Ceremony. This event brought together alums and recent graduates of the college, celebrating their transition from students to professionals.

According to the website, the Order of the Engineer was initiated in the United States to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present a visible symbol identifying the engineer to the public. By taking the Obligation of the Engineer and wearing the stainless steel ring on their working hand, participants publicly pledged to practice integrity, fairness, and respect in their professional endeavors.

Learning Communities

Application Due By: September 4, 2024

The Digital Humanities Learning Community is an academic year-long community that creates opportunities for EMU instructors to explore the theory and practice of leveraging the digital humanities within their own classrooms. A small group of 4-6 dedicated instructors will learn various approaches and benefits to incorporating the digital humanities in courses; learn from leading experts in the field; practice with different tools and interfaces; and design a potential project for their own classroom. Participants in collaboration with the facilitators will seek out compelling ways to blend research and practice by designing digital humanities projects within their courses, thus creating unique and meaningful opportunities for students to engage in publicly accessible research. Faculty completing this learning community will receive an honorarium of $325 at the end of the school year.

Teaching in Turbulent Times

Date: Friday, September 27, 2024

A student sits tiredly at a computer

As instructors, we are sometimes placed in the difficult position of teaching immediately after (or during) an unnerving event or a crisis—and it seems these situations are happening more and more frequently. Sometimes, we have time to process the event before we must teach, and to think at length about how to address it (or not). Other times, we may have much less warning. As such, it is important to be prepared ahead of time to appropriately handle difficult situations (whatever they may be) with both the students’ and our wellness in mind.

Amidst our heated and contentious political climate, this program offers guidance for instructional staff in thinking about the 2024 election, and other stressful local, national, and world events, in our classrooms. Please consider attending this workshop to find support and strategies for dealing with the challenges of the outside world, while navigating the complexities of academic life. We invite all tenure-track faculty and lecturers to attend this program. Lunch will be provided.

This program, facilitated by EMU library faculty Kate Pittsley-Sousa and Julia Nims, is aimed at encouraging, assisting, and developing skills in EMU instructors related to the adoption of free or more affordable course materials. EMU instructors will be introduced to key concepts of open educational resources and will practice different methods of finding affordable reading materials. The goal of this program is for each participant to discover an alternative text that they would consider adopting. All sessions will be held virtually over Zoom. Attendees will receive a $100 honorarium for participating in this series.

Faculty converse at a conference

Each year, the FDC works with ORDA (the Office of Research Development and Administration) to host the Faculty Research and Creative Activity Showcase. This year, we are moving the event to the fall (Tuesday, October 29, from 3 PM to 5 PM), and inviting students to visit tables highlighting faculty work. We hope to create opportunities for faculty to network with other faculty in the school as well as with students who are interested in their line of work, to build partnerships. We particularly invite recent recipients of EMU Internal Research Awards to join us and display some of their work in progress. Please save the date and plan to join us for good conversation. DRC Accommodation Letter Updates

Our Two Newest Case Managers

The DRC has moved to a fully online Accommodation Case Management Software called Accommodate. As we begin the Fall 2024 semester, this means there are some updates to our processes.

Below are instructions for the new accommodation letter process through Accommodate.

  1. The DRC will no longer send LOAs directly to faculty or students; instead, students and Faculty will receive a notification email from Accommodate on how to log in to their Accommodate Portal and access their student's LOA. This is a single sign-on, so please make sure to have DUO available to authenticate.
  2. Once you are logged in, you will see the courses you are slated to teach from Banner, and if there are any students in that course with accommodations you will have access to their LOA, which is explicitly tailored to each course. We are able to do this now since students will renew their accommodation request each semester versus once per academic year, as not all accommodations will work for each course.
    1. Faculty will need to contact the DRC via email DRC@emich.edu if they believe an accommodation is not reasonable for their specific course or have questions on how to implement it.
    2. Faculty are reminded that they are not to request any medical documentation or request a student disclose their disability at any time as the only offices that are able to review medical documents and ensure HIPAA is being followed are the DRC and/or the Dean of Students Office.
    3. Students and Faculty are always encouraged to meet with students with a LOA within the first couple weeks of classes and review the LOA to ensure it is understood or if there are any concerns. If Faculty have not yet been sent their copy of the LOA, students are also encouraged to download and email it to their faculty.
    4. The DRC can only send LOAs to Faculty through their Accommodate portal once they have been entered into Banner. Therefore, some faculty may receive a LOA after the start of the semester once all Faculty are officially assigned their courses.
    5. Faculty are also able to download a student’s LOA from Accommodate for their own organizational purposes or to work with IT if they need support providing accommodation within their Canvas site.

Eastern Michigan University Featured in The Princeton Review’s Best 390 Colleges for 2025

EMU is one of the nation's best institutions for undergraduates according to The Princeton Review. The education services company profiles and recommends EMU in the new edition of its annual college guide, The Best 390 Colleges: 2025 Edition.

Only about 15% of America’s 2,600 four-year colleges are profiled in the book. The Princeton Review choses the colleges for the book based on data it annually collects from surveys of 2,000 college administrators about their institutions’ academic offerings. The company also reviews data from its surveys of college students attending the schools who report on their experiences at their institutions.

How to College

h2c

How h2c came to be

As the latest season of one of EMU’s newest workshop series hits the ground running, we asked Director of Academic Advising Alicia Apperson about how “How to College” came to be.

How to College (H2C) was an idea that emerged after seeing how COVID-19 impacted students on campus in ways that perhaps hadn't been as obvious before the pandemic. Issues such as face to face communication skills, self-advocacy, and student-driven anxiety were only exacerbated by COVID-19. H2C was created as a way to offer approachable, small-group workshops to facilitate discussion, to connect students with campus resources, and to show students that they aren’t alone in their worries.

two people sitting at a table in front of a computer

Starting in Fall ‘23, H2C held 8 workshops with a total of 112 participants. This semester, H2C hopes to grow that number with 8 new workshops held both virtually and in person. This semester they’ve also partnered with the Honor’s College for student volunteers to promote more student-driven dialogue during sessions.

Fall ‘24 will offer 8 workshops, each with a different topic. September alone will have three sessions, including:

  1. How to College, a workshop focused on college basics like managing emails, communicating with professors, and understanding campus resources.
  2. Transfer Students, a workshop devoted to all things transfer--MTA, Articulation Agreements, understanding how to send credits between institutions, why some classes transfer successfully and others do not, etc. This one will be on zoom as many transfer students have work and/or families.
  3. Financial Aid Game Night, a workshop planned alongside the Holman Success Center, which will provide a brief PowerPoint from a Financial Aid representative followed by a competitive Jeopardy game, with pizza!

All students can benefit from H2C workshops. With the wide variety in topics H2C hosts, it is more likely than not a student will find a subject beneficial for them. Past anonymous feedback from the Fall ‘23 workshops praised the small-group atmosphere where all voices could be heard, the variety of student experiences present, and the practical advice gained from hearing testimonials from students, staff, and faculty.

“I enjoyed hearing others’ answers to the questions and being able to have group discussions” - Student Feedback

H2C connects students with their campus, providing a deeper understanding of the resources available to them and growing the sense of community they have among their cohort, staff, and faculty. Encourage your students to register today!

If you’d like to be involved in H2C or have other inquiries, reach out to Vanessa Gardner.

EMU

ESPORTS

The Esports department is set to move from the Rec/IM to the Student Center, a transition that aligns with our commitment to providing a more centralized and accessible space for students involved in this rapidly growing field. This relocation is designed to enhance the student experience by positioning Esports at the heart of campus life, making it easier for students to engage with the program both academically and recreationally.

  • Increased Accessibility: The move to the Student Center will make the Esports facilities more accessible to a broader range of students. The central location will encourage greater participation and foster a stronger sense of community among Esports enthusiasts.
  • Enhanced Facilities: The Student Center will offer upgraded facilities that are tailored to the needs of the Esports program, including state-of-the-art gaming stations, viewing areas, and spaces for team collaboration. This move represents a significant investment in the future of the program.
  • Strategic Integration: By situating the Esports department in a central location, we aim to better integrate it with other student activities and services. This will promote cross-departmental collaboration and help Esports become a more visible and integral part of our campus culture.
  • Future Growth: The relocation also positions the Esports program for future growth, with the potential for increased student involvement, academic integration, and partnerships with industry leaders.
