Eastern Michigan University has teamed up with Target to launch the “Reface My Living Space” initiative, offering two students the opportunity to win $500 gift cards to decorate their new apartments at Lakeview and Westview Apartments.
From EMU Today: “With the rising cost of living, creating a home away from home can be a daunting task for students. EMU’s partnership with Target aims to alleviate some of the financial pressures, allowing students to focus more on their studies and less on the cost of furnishing their apartments.”
Please encourage students to apply!

NASPA IV-E Student Affairs Regional Conference Registration Is Open!
We are very excited to announce registration for our Fall Regional Conference.
All Region IV-E members are invited to gather with us in Cleveland, Ohio, at the Westin Cleveland Downtown Hotel on October 26-29, 2024. Our conference theme, Bridging Boundaries: Connecting the Past to Higher Education's Future, embraces the art deco figures that adorn the Hope Memorial Bridge in Cleveland and were designed to represent the progress of ground transportation. The conference will provide a framework for us to explore our progress, learn, celebrate, network, and discuss how we lead, contribute, and sustain our university communities.
Our conference featured speakers are Dr. Amelia Parnell, the incoming NASPA President; Dr. Todd Diacon, the President of Kent State University; and Dr. Laura J. Bloomberg, the President of Cleveland State University.
Additionally, each state coordinator is responsible for coordinating a state reception during the conference, and I would love to see EMU in the building. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Anthony Webster, the NASPA Region IV-E Michigan State Coordinator.

If yes, the Academic Leadership Community of Practice (AL-CoP) may be a great opportunity for you! This CoP was first offered in 2023-2024 academic year and is back by popular demand!
This year, the Al-CoP will be facilitated by Rachelle Marshall (Administrative Secretary for the Department of Teacher Education), Andrea Zakrajsek (Associate Dean of the College of Health and Human Services), and Jeffrey Bernstein (Director of the Faculty Development Center and Professor of Political Science). The Digital Humanities Learning Community is an academic year-long community that creates opportunities for EMU instructors to explore the theory and practice of leveraging the digital humanities within their own classrooms. A small group of 4-6 dedicated instructors will learn various approaches and benefits to incorporating the digital humanities in courses; learn from leading experts in the field; practice with different tools and interfaces; and design a potential project for their own classroom. Participants in collaboration with the facilitators will seek out compelling ways to blend research and practice by designing digital humanities projects within their courses, thus creating unique and meaningful opportunities for students to engage in publicly accessible research. Faculty completing this learning community will receive an honorarium of $325 at the end of the school year.
Application Due By: September 11, 2024
Aligned to EMU’s strategic plan, this Fall 2024 Learning Community experience will consist of three workshops that provide an opportunity for faculty participants to learn about the new and innovative 2+2 Early Childhood Education fully online program proposal process that can be applied and tailored to various disciplines across Eastern Michigan University. Participants will explore all aspects of the 2+2 program proposal development, and follow a supportive project guide designed to support faculty in developing new and innovative program initiatives leading to a proposal. This university-wide learning community is open to all full-time faculty and full-time lecturers, particularly if they are interested in learning about and creating innovative discipline-specific program development initiatives designed to meet the needs of the modern student, help address low enrollment, and support current workforce demands in the community. Those who complete the program will receive an honorarium of $300.
Application Due By: September 5, 2024
The Engaging in Inclusive Practices amid Challenging Times Learning Community is bringing together a group of educators to explore topics on inclusive practices in order to create more positive learning environments for students so that they can persist in their majors and toward graduation. This year’s General Education Professional Learning Community will focus on active learning—designing outcome-based learning activities for general education classes. This semester-long learning community will foster the creation and revision of measurable, relevant, and effective learning activities to ensure accurate understanding and assessment of student learning outcomes in four major areas: Social Sciences (GEKS), Humanity (GEKH), Arts (GEKA), and Writing Intensive (GEEC-WRGT). We encourage tenure-track, non-tenure-track, graduate instructors, part-time and full-time lecturers to participate. The community will meet twice a month from early October to early December. Participants who complete all community meetings and assignments will receive an $300 honorarium, a certificate, and a set of new/revised learning activities and strategies to improve their pedagogies and ultimately students' learning outcomes.
Application Due By: September 10, 2024
This year-long learning community will consist of both faculty and students who aim to generate conversations surrounding the student experience and ways it could be enhanced. The goal will be to create from this process artifacts that could be used to help teach others (both students and faculty) effective techniques for building these student-to-faculty, and student-to-student, connections.Students and faculty who participate in this learning community will have the opportunity to contribute to addressing a significant challenge at EMU. They will also become part of a growing community rethinking many assumptions about higher education, at EMU and beyond. Those who persist in this learning community will receive a $500 honorarium.
