Location: meet at Student Center Circle Drive


Join us for an educational trip to the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit. Explore African Americans' vibrant heritage and rich contributions through captivating exhibits and powerful stories. An enriching experience for the EMU community to connect, learn, and celebrate this significant cultural legacy. A fee of $10 is required for registration, which includes transportation, admission, and lunch. Plan to meet at the Student Center Circle Drive at 9:30 a.m. The bus will leave promptly at 10 a.m. and return to campus at 4 p.m.

Apply to the Undergraduate Research Stimulus Program

The Undergraduate Research Office invites undergraduate students, with the assistance of their faculty mentors, to submit applications for the Summer 2024 and Fall 2024 Undergraduate Research Stimulus Program Award.

The Undergraduate Research Stimulus Program (URSP) is intended to facilitate research partnerships between undergraduate students and Eastern Michigan University faculty. Successful student applicants will receive a $2,200 fellowship in support of their research efforts. The collaborating faculty member may receive $600, which can be used for lab/studio supplies or equipment, professional travel, or other professional expenses.

Deadline: Saturday February 17, 2024, 11:59 PM, for Summer 2024 Awards (May - August) & Fall 2024 Awards (August - December)

Fall semester awards require students to be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits. Summers award requires a minimum of 6 credits for summer or an Intent to Enroll form on file (this step only needs to be completed if you receive the award). The form should indicate the student will enroll in a minimum of 6 credit hours in the following fall semester.

Grants Announced from the Upshur Institute for Civic Education - Apply Now

Do you have an idea for a teaching strategy or curricular project that promotes active learning around civic education and citizen engagement but need support to make this happen?


In 2022, the Jiu-Hwa Lo Upshur Institute for Civic Education (UICE) was initiated to prepare Eastern Michigan University students for the intellectual demands of democratic participation through critical inquiry and engagement in History and other Social Studies disciplines. The Upshur Institute is pleased to offer grants of up to $6,000 for the 2024-2025 academic year.


All Eastern Michigan University faculty, lecturers, and staff working directly with students can apply for these awards. To be eligible for consideration, application materials must be received by March 15, 2024, 11:59 pm.

A successful project proposal will:


  • Address an instructional need or opportunity via creative and/or active learning strategies
  • Articulate the intended impact for teaching and learning in History, Social Studies, and/or Civic Education
  • Be grounded in innovative pedagogies for the teaching and learning of History, Social Studies, and/or Civic Education and an understanding of effective learning through high-impact practices and transformational experiences
  • Illustrate an ethos of collaborative and/or interdisciplinary work
  • Include a plan for evaluation of, reflection on, and dissemination of results to a wider audience
  • Include a statement of feasibility, budget, and timeline for project implementation.

Projects could develop Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement through:


  • Course development plans that encourage greater student engagement and offer the opportunity for transformative learning experiences
  • Collaborative and/or interdisciplinary work around democratic engagement
  • Research projects, including conducting experiments and/or demonstrations
  • Projects related to the scholarship of teaching and learning
  • Community engagement experiences (local or global)
  • Team-based or problem-based learning
  • Large group debates
  • Peer teaching
  • Role-playing or game-based learning
  • Place-based pedagogies
  • Faculty learning communities.

EMU Biology Students present research at the Stewardship Network Conference

Sadie Baker (M.S. F23), Raelyn Maroney (B.S. W24), Kai Garcia (B.S. F23)

Three Biology students, Sadie Baker, Kai Garcia, and Raelyn Maroney, presented their research on the Huron River at the Stewardship Network Conference in Lansing on January 29th. Sadie presented findings from her M.S. thesis on sources of microplastics to the Huron River, and Kai and Raelyn's projects investigated the effects of dams on aquatic metabolism and macroinvertebrates, respectively.

Rana Aabed

Rana Aabed semi-finalist in 2025 Fulbright Scholarship Competition

Rana Aabed, a senior psychology major and 2020 Presidential Scholar, has been named a semi-finalist in the 2025 Fulbright Scholarship competition. Rana will find out later this spring if she is selected to spend a year abroad teaching English in Turkey.


The Fulbright U.S. Student Program expands perspectives through academic and professional advancement and cross-cultural dialogue. Program participants pursue graduate study, conduct research, or teach English abroad.

EMU Honors students accepted into 2024 PPIA Junior Summer Institute

LouLou Missome-Engohang and Estelle Hackos

Two Honors College political science majors, LouLou Missome-Engohang and Estelle Hackos, have been accepted into the 2024 Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute at the University of Michigan.


Each year, PPIA seeks out high-potential undergraduate students from universities across the country to participate in an intensive seven-week Junior Summer Institute before their senior year. The JSI summer program equips fellows with the knowledge and skills they will need to succeed in graduate school and ultimately, in influential roles serving the public good. This marks the third year in a row that EMU has sent students to the PPIA program.

EMU alum Alexa Cooley ('20) was recently named one of the Top 10 House Staffers to Watch in 2024 by Medium, an online publishing platform. Michigan’s presidential primary election takes place on Tuesday, February 27, 2024. The University encourages all students and employees who are eligible to vote to exercise their right to vote. This year, you have several options for how to cast your vote: in-person on election day, in-person early voting, or by absentee ballot.

Early In-Person Voting


Michigan voters now have the right to vote early in-person during nine (9) full days prior to every major election. Early Voting sites will be operating across Washtenaw County to accommodate those voters who wish to cast their ballot in-person before Election Day. Dr. Muhammad Ahmed

Professor Muhammad Ahmed Selected Fellow of Industrial Engineering & Operation Management

Prof. Muhammad Ahmed, a professor of engineering management, has been selected for the coveted professional distinction of Fellow of Industrial Engineering and Operation Management. He will receive his award at an IEOM conference in Dubai on Feb 14, 2024.


The Fellow distinction is the highest level of membership to recognize individual contribution to the industrial engineering and operations management profession. Fellows have distinguished themselves by conducting theoretical and applied research and successfully implemented proven industrial engineering and operations management tools. In addition, they have improved the productivity of manufacturing and service industries and created jobs and career opportunities for the betterment of mankind.
